Do you have one or more cloud accounts, i.e. Google Drive, Dropbox, etc.? Do you want to have some more control over the files and have them backed up? This article will explain how you can set up a backup system to back up your cloud files to your Synology NAS.

Prerequisites

It is assumed that you have your Synology NAS fully set up with a storage pool, for this article we used a Synology Rackstation RS812+.

Installation

To create backups, we need the Cloud Sync app on your Synology NAS. Therefore, log in on DSM on your NAS and locate the Package Center. Search for Cloud Sync and install it.
If you cannot find the package you can visit the Synology website and download it manually: synology.com

Setup

Open the freshly installed Cloud Sync app and find the plus sign.

Select your preferred cloud provider and click Next. In certain scenarios (i.e. Google Drive or Dropbox) it will open a new window to grant Synology permission to your cloud provider. Follow the steps required.

Now fill in the task settings:

  • Connection name: Friendly name for the Cloud Sync job
  • Local path: The path on your NAS to store the backup
  • Remote path: Select the path to backup from your cloud drive
  • Sync direction: Choose your desired way here, you can backup to your cloud, from your cloud, or both
  • Enable advanced consistency check
  • Optionally, enable Data encryption
  • Optionally, fill in schedule settings, to not have communication to and from your NAS 24/7

Once satisfied click Next. Now validate the settings and click Apply.

Now you have set up a connection and if it is the scheduled time, the NAS will sync your cloud storage.
