< Back to the Wiki

Are you running a WordPress website and do you want to send emails using your Google account?

Prerequisites

For this scenario, it is assumed you have:

  • WordPress instance
  • Google account

Prepare Google Account

To use the WordPress mailing service, we will use an app password from your Google account. This password is different from your Google password.
To set up an app password, navigate to myaccount.google.com/apppasswords (if this is not available for your account, try enabling 2-Step Verification for your Google account). Enter an app name, such as WordPress … Site, and click Create.
Note down the password since you will only see this password once!

Setup

Install the WP Mail SMTP (wordpress.org) plugin.
Navigate to WP Mail SMTP – Settings. Scroll down to Mailer and select Other SMTP. Under Other SMTP enter:

  • SMTP Host: smtp.gmail.com
  • Encryption: TLS
  • SMTP Port: 587
  • Authentication: On
  • SMTP Username: Your Google email
  • SMTP Password: Your newly created app password from before

Click Save Settings and navigate to WP Mail SMTP – Tools. Here you can send a test email to validate if everything works.
